Last night Tedeschi Trucks Band‘s Wheels Of Soul Tour pulled into Providence, Rhode Island for a stop at the historic Providence Performing Arts Center. The 12-piece ensemble, who are being joined by both Hot Tuna and The Wood Brothers as opening acts throughout the run, leaned heavy on cover tunes during their visit to the smallest state in the union.
Tedeschi Trucks Band opened the night with “Anyhow” and “Laugh About It” the two opening tracks from their most recent studio album Let Me Get By. From there the cover songs came at a fast and furious pace with TTB offering up takes on Derek & The Dominos’ “Keep On Growing” and The Beatles’ “Within You Without You” ahead of their own track “Just As Strange.”
Next the band was joined by guitarist Oliver Wood (The Wood Brothers) for a take on Sleepy John Estes’ “Leaving Trunk” and Rahsaan Roland Kirk’s “Volunteered Slavery,” that featured some fantastic interplay from all three guitarists on stage as well as new addition Carey Frank. The recently revived cover of “Will The Circle Be Unbroken?” and “Bound For Glory” followed with Derek Trucks dipping into this solo catalog next for “Get What You Deserve.” John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery,” the Grateful Dead’s “Sugaree” and Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland’s “I Pity The Fool” followed, with “I Want More” and Santana’s “Soul Sacrifice” closing out the main set. The Tedeschi Trucks Band finished off the night with one more cover, encoring with Joe Cocker’s take on “Space Captain.”
