Vampire Weekend celebrated the release of their new album, Only God Was Above Us, with a special show held on Monday afternoon during the solar eclipse in Austin. The band welcomed Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars and Dave “1” Macklovitch of Chromeo for guest appearances at the show held outdoors at Moody Amphitheater.
Monday’s concert was the first full show of 2024 for Vampire Weekend. A livestream of the complete concert was broadcast via Veeps and remains available to view on-demand. The performance took place on frontman Ezra Koenig’s 40th birthday. Vampire Weekend delivered a 15-song first set that included the live debuts of Only God Was Above Us cuts “Ice Cream Piano,” “Connect” and “Gen-X Cops.” The band took a break in order to give attendees the opportunity to witness the rare total solar eclipse.

Vampire Weekend kicked off the second set with their first performance of “Hope” off their new album. Ezra then brought out Mars for the first live take on “Tonight,” a song from Phoenix’s 2022 album Alpha Zulu featuring Koenig. Dave 1 came out next and VW used the opportunity of having the two French speakers on stage to banter in their native languages. Mars and Dave 1 wound up leading the crowd in singing “Happy Birthday To You” in French to honor Koenig’s birthday. Dave 1 then led Vampire Weekend through Chromeo’s “Needy Girl.”
The band followed Macklovitch’s appearance by performing “Harmony Hall” off 2019’s Father Of The Bride. A pairing of classics “Oxford Comma” and “A-Punk” gave way to a nicely extended “Cocaine Cowboys” that featured portions of their own “Married In A Gold Rush” as well as Larry Gatlin’s “All The Gold In California,” Gram Parsons’ “Sin City” and the Grateful Dead’s “Cumberland Blues.” Vampire Weekend wrapped the special show with oldie “Walcott.”
