Valerie June recently appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show. June offered a cover of “Big Dream,” by acclaimed author, professor and songwriter Alice Randall.
June’s version of “Big Dream” is set to appear on Randall’s forthcoming compilation album, My Black Country, due out on April 12 via Oh Boy Records. The album is a companion to Randall’s book, My Black Country: A Journey Through Country Music’s Black Past, Present, and Future.

A decorated Nashville songwriter, Randall became the first Black woman to co-write a number one country hit with 1994’s “XXX’s and OOO’s (An American Girl),” recorded by Trisha Yearwood. She has also written songs performed by Glen Campbell, Johnny Cash, Marie Osmond and more.
“I had songs recorded in the 80s, in the 90s, in the 2000s, and 2010s, but I never once had the joy of hearing one of the songs that I wrote from the perspective of a Black woman recorded by a Black woman. With this project…I hope to change that,” Randall stated via Oh Boy Records’ website.
My Black Country features Rhiannon Giddens, Allison Russell, Adia Victoria, Sunny War and more performing Randall’s songs. Valerie June handles penultimate track, “Big Dream.”
