Umphrey’s McGee Dusts Off ‘Roundabout’ Cover During ‘Wrapped In The Round’ Finale

Umphrey’s McGee concluded a run of two Wrapped In The Round livestream concerts on Thursday night. The band performed in the round at a soundstage in Illinois for a 120-minute set that included a rare and fitting cover of “Roundabout” by Yes.

Once again, UM used StewArt themes submitted by fans to guide some of their improvistions. Last night’s concert began with the instrumental “Miss Tinkle’s Overture” and an expansive version of “Looks.” The band then jammed “Slacker” into “Miami Virtue.” Next, percussionist Andy Farag headed to the middle of the performance area to select a theme from a glass bowl. “Technical Difficulties” was the choice and gave band members a chance to screw around on their instruments as the lights were turned off and on throughout the brief segment.

The next theme picked was “Rocket Launch,” which led to a bold improvisation featuring keyboardist Joel Cummins on synth as the band built to a heavy climax. UM then went back to classic material for “2×2” and “Resolution.” The latter featured a thematic “Under Water Ghosts” jam. From there, the sextet worked “Half Delayed” into “Den” ahead of their first “Roundabout” cover since New Year’s Eve 2018. Drummer Kris Myers handled lead vocals on “Roundabout,” which was initially played live by UM on December 30, 2010 with last night’s take just their 10th ever.

Thursday’s Wrapped In The Round livestream special came to a close with the pairing of “Liberty Echo” and “Hajimemashite.” On Saturday and Sunday, Umphrey’s McGee will perform before audiences at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Illinois for a pair of At The Drive Inn concerts.
