Chicago-based sextet Umphrey’s McGee continued Fall Tour 2018 on Thursday night at The Fillmore Charlotte in Charlotte. Umphrey’s McGee was joined by vocalist Kanika Moore as part of their first set last night.
Kanika Moore is the lead vocalist in UM bassist Ryan Stasik‘s Doom Flamingo project. Moore emerged to sing a cover of Prince’s “I Wanna Be Your Lover” as the penultimate song of the first set. Umphrey’s last performed “I Wanna Be Your Lover” back on January 28. Last night’s opening stanza also included jammed out versions of “#5” and “Booth Love” as well as the return of “Liberty Echo” for the first time since July 17, 2016.
Umphrey’s second set in Charlotte was bookended by portions of “Pay The Snucka.” The first portion of “Snucka” gave way to “Triangle Tear” off it’s you ahead of a lengthy “Wappy Sprayberry” that gave way to the 2018 debut of “Uncommon.” More jams followed as “Stinko’s Ascension” spanned nearly 18 minutes, while an unfinished “Puppet String” also featured plenty of improvisation. The sextet capped the evening by inserting a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Fool In The Rain” within “Utopian Fir” before completing “Puppet String.”
