Friday was a big day for Umphrey’s McGee as the prog-jam-rockers released their eleventh studio album it’s not us via their own imprint Nothing Too Fancy Music. So it was no surprise that the Chicago-based band was in a celebratory mood last night as they kicked off a two night run at the historic Taft Theatre in Cincinnati, Ohio. The sextet’s two-set show featured bust outs, rarities, a pair of debuts and also saw them being joined by a full brass band.

After an opening set by Big Something, UM got their portion of the night underway with the one-two punch of “Bathing Digits” > “Bad Friday,” playing the former for just the 32nd time since 2014. Setlist staple “Example 1” followed, with Umphrey’s dropping in a cover of “Flying” in the middle of it, busting out the track from The Beatles’ 1967 release Magical Mystery Tour for the first time in 295 shows. Later in the set, the band welcomed out the Cincy Brass Band as they delivered their debut take on “Chariots Of Fire,” which was composed by Vangelis for the 1981 film. The brass brand stuck around for one more tune as the ad hoc ensemble closed out the first frame with “Partyin’ Peeps,” that featured a jam on the traditional New Orleans tune “When The Saints Go Marching In.”

Umph’s second set of the night kicked-off with a lengthy jammed-filled run that began with longtime workhorse “All In Time.” The track from Greatest Hits Vol. III segued straight into just their tenth ever take on “Amble On” and their first since April of 2016. Two songs later they delivered another rarity as they busted out their cover of the Allman Brothers Band’s “Jessica” for the first time in over a year and just their third take on it since 2014. The band didn’t ignore it’s not us as they used their ‘record release show’ to debut “Whistle Kids” before bringing things to an end with “Pay The Snucka.” Umphrey’s McGee returned to the stage for a two-song encore playing “Orfeo” > “All In Time” to close out the night.
