Umphrey’s McGee Announces UMBowl 2022

Umphrey’s McGee will bring their football-themed UMBowl concerts to Chicago’s Riviera Theatre on November 11 and 12. The band’s hometown of Chicago hosted the first four UMBowl shows annually from 2010 through 2013. UMBowl moved to The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York in 2014 and for last year’s installment. Additional UMBowls were held at Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas in 2015 and 2016.

UMBowl 2022, also known as UMBowl IX, will feature three sets each night. Last year’s football-themed performances at The Cap marked the first time UMBowl spanned two nights as the event returned following a five-year hiatus. The first set on Friday, October 8, 2021 was played “Choose Your Own Adventure” style, while the second set saw the band go acoustic for a batch of songs voted on by fans. UM devised the setlist for the “Band’s Choice” third set and gave fans the opportunity to pick between “Wizard Burial Ground” or “Front Porch” to end an encore than began with “Partyin’ Peeps.” It was “Wizard Burial Ground” that won out and closed the night.

On October 9, 2021 Umphrey’s McGee presented a “Stew Art Event” first set in which fans guided the improvised music by texting thematic ideas, some of which were display behind the band, such as “Zappa Goes To A Rave,” “Reggae Against The Machine” and “Who Dosed Debussy.” The second set on the second night of UMBowl VIII was an “All Night Wrong” affair featuring covers voted on by fans, while the third set was “Band’s Choice.”
