Umphrey’s McGee Shares New Single ‘Looks’

One week from today Umphrey’s McGee will issue a new studio album entitled it’s not us via their Nothing Too Fancy Music record label. The band has shared another sampling of their 11th studio LP in a lyric video for the track “Looks.”
One of several new songs on it’s not us, “Looks” has yet to have been played live by UM. They previously issued the singles “The Silent Type” and “Half Delayed,” both of which made their live debuts during the band’s recent New Year’s Run in Denver. Guitarists Jake Cinninger and Brendan Bayliss debuted “You & You Alone” at their Holiday Show in Chicago last month.
Cinninger spoke with Paste, who premiered “Looks,” about the new single, stating:
“Looks” is an exploration of future metallic funk, with an undercurrent of uncertainty permeating throughout. The track is about human misadventure, and the resulting bad behavior. It represents a peripheral vision for trouble. Sonically, we hope listeners recognize the fearless mashup of styles. The guitar solo at the end was actually the very first take I played, performed live while we were tracking the drums. It is not a typical Umphrey’s track … but then again, what is? Our formula is constant change, designed to keep us happy and forever moving forward as a band. It’s foreshadowing & reminiscing all in one.

Umphrey’s McGee will appear in support of the new album as a headliner of this year’s Whigfest in Tampa, Florida. Organizers have announced the event will move from Cuban Courtyard to four locations around Ybor City. UM’s appearance and other acts will now appear a the Ritz Ybor’s main stage, while The Ritz’s side room will also host sets. The nearby The Attic and The Orpheum and First Chance, Last Chance Bar will host additional performances as well.
