Umphrey’s McGee will issue a new studio LP of originally conceived mashups entitled ZONKEY on November 11. Today Relix has premiered one of the album’s 12 tracks, “Electric Avenue To Hell” featuring special guest Jennifer Hartswick.
“Electric Avenue To Hell” mixes portions of the band’s own “The Triple Wide” with Eddy Grant’s one hit wonder “Electric Avenue” and AC/DC’s smash “Highway To Hell.” Umphrey’s debuted the mashup as part of their Halloween show in Milwaukee on October 31, 2013. “Electric Avenue To Hell” remained on the shelf until last month’s North Coast Music Festival in Chicago, when UM was joined by Hartswick for the second-ever rendition of the mashup.
Listen to Umphrey’s McGee’s “Electric Avenue To Hell”:
Additional LP tracks include “National Loser Anthem” mashing together Radiohead’s “National Anthem,” Beck’s “Loser” and Phil Collins’ “In The Air Tonight” as well as “Life During Exodus” which compiles Talking Heads’ “Life During Wartime,” Bob Marley’s “Exodus,” Frank Zappa’s “City Of Tiny Lites” and Chicago’s “25 or 6 to 4.” Another album cut “Can’t Rock My Dream Face,” pulls from Michael Jackson’s “Rock With You,” The Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face” and Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” and along with “Life During Exodus” and “National Loser Anthem” can be streamed here:
Mashups entered the UM repertoire when they debuted a number of cover and original combinations at the band’s Halloween concert in 2008. The final song played that night at The Warfield in San Francisco was “Sad Clint Eastwood,” a mashup of Metallica’s “Sad But True” and Gorillaz’s “Clint Eastwood” which was recorded for ZONKEY. The first Umphrey’s McGee studio track to ever feature bassist Ryan Stasik not only on lead vocals but any vocals at all, “Sad Clint Eastwood” can be streamed below:
ZONKEY is available for pre-order via UM’s online store.
