Umphrey’s McGee Regulates In Louisville
By Andy Kahn Aug 7, 2016 • 7:35 am PDT
On Saturday night, Umphrey’s McGee wrapped a four night run through the Midwest with a performance at the Iroquois Amphitheater in Louisville, Kentucky. The two set show was capped by a bust out cover of Warren G classic hip-hop hit during the evening’s encore.
UM began Saturday’s first set with “Flamethrower” > “Wappy Sprayberry” > “Got Your Milk (Right Here).” Following “Attachments” a nice stretch of improvisation linked “FF” with the tailing “Mail Package.” The year’s second UM performance of “When the World Is Running Down You Make the Best of What’s Still Around” by The Police segued into an elongated “Blue Echo.” The first half was brought to a close with “Wife Soup.”
Set two opened with recently added original “In The Black” and the jam vehicle “Hurt Bird Bath.” Keyboardist Joel Cummins later led the band through “Kimble” following a rendition of “Intentions Clear.” Umphrey’s staple “Phil’s Farm” offered another source of improvisation ahead of a turn to a burst of hard rock with “Nopener.” Longtime favorite “August” was then tapped to fill the second set closer slot.
The encore started with “In The Kitchen” that segued into a bust out cover of “Regulate” with percussionist Andy Farag stepping forward to handle Nate Dogg’s verses and guitarist Brendan Bayliss taking Warren G’s parts. Umphrey’s segued back to “In The Kitchen” following the 100+ show break out of the hip-hop anthem.
