Umphrey’s McGee Offers Several Rarities In Peoria
By Andy Kahn Aug 5, 2016 • 7:48 am PDT
Last night, Umphrey’s McGee held a home state concert at CEFCU Center Stage At The Landing in Peoria, Illinois. From the onset and throughout the two set show several rarely played songs in the UM repertoire were performed along the Illinois River.
Guitarist Jake Cinninger jumped on keyboards next to Joel Cummins during the opening cover of Grandmaster Flash’s “The Message” which had last been played in Atlanta in January 2015, spanning a 158 show gap. The instrumental prog rocker “Eat” was supplanted with Cummins’ piano-driven “Orfeo” which hadn’t been seen in 115 shows. After transitioning back to “Eat” the sextet moved into Mile Davis’ “In A Silent Way” which itself was last covered by UM in January of last year, some 154 shows ago. The first half drew to a close with a “Push The Pig” > “Resolution” > “All In Time” sequence.
The second set opened with “Der Bluten Kat” that segued into just the second “Kula” of the year ahead of a move back to the end of “DBK.” Takes on “Ringo” and “The Triple Wide” came before the rarely played original “Forks” and the set closing pairing of a nicely jammed out “Kabump” and “Make It Right.” One more bust out was in store as the encore began with Fugazi’s “Waiting Room,” which returned to an UM setlist for the first time in 118 shows and was dedicated to one of the band’s Japanese fans. “Mulche’s Odyssey” then brought the encore and the show to a rousing conclusion.
Umphrey’s McGee performs again tonight at Farm Bureau Insurance Lawn at White River State Park in Indianapolis. TourGigs is offering a live webcast of the show.
