Umphrey’s McGee Dusts Off Steely Dan Cover With Jamie Shields In Northfield

Umphrey’s McGee welcomed keyboardist Jamie Shields of opening act The New Deal to share the stage last night for the band’s first cover of the Steely Dan classic “Hey Nineteen” since 2018. Thursday’s concert took place at Live At MGM Northfield Park in Northfield, Ohio.
The sextet opened with “Room To Breathe,” which was last played on May 25, 2019 at the Summer Camp Music Festival. UM then jammed out “Intentions Clear” before pairing “Forks” and “Push & Pull.” Next, Jamie “Guitar” Shields emerged for a jam out of Umphrey’s first cover of “Hey Nineteen” since August 16, 2018 – a span of 131 shows. More improv followed as the set-closing duo of “#5” and “40’s Theme” each went deep.
Last night’s second set began with a chant of “Andy” for percussionist Andy Farag. So it was fitting “Andy’s Last Beer” came after “The Silent Type,” which guitarist Brendan Bayliss described as Farag’s “theme song.” A near 15-minute “Miss Tinkle’s Overture” followed and then “Booth Love” and “Wappy Sprayberry” kept the jams flowing. UM ended the set with “Resolution” and “Upward.” The band’s recently debuted cover of Rush’s “Limelight” served as the encore. Tonight, the band heads to Detroit for the first of two shows in The Motor City. Live streams are available via TourGigs.
