Umphrey’s McGee Guitarist Jake Cinninger Provides A ‘Rig Rundown’
By Scott Bernstein Jun 29, 2018 • 2:41 pm PDT

Umphrey’s McGee guitarist Jake Cinninger recently gave Eric Lucero of Music Store Live a full rundown of his current rig. The “Rig Rundown” video was filmed before UM’s March 25 show at Observatory North Park in San Diego.
Jake provided a number of examples of how he gets such an expressive tone. Cinninger started by showing off his G&L Guitar, which he had received two weeks prior and played at every show since. The guitarist then squats at his pedal board with Lucero. Jake went through his signal chain and displayed how his tremolo pedal changes his tone. Cinninger demonstrated a few of the distortion pedals he uses as well as a phaser.
The guitarist also gave examples of his “secret sauce” chorus effect, a delay pedal he’s been using for over 20 years and an overdrive pedal that helps smooth out his riffs. Cinninger then brought Lucero over to his amps and demonstrated the different sounds they provide. Jake ended by sharing advice for up-and-coming guitarists.
