Umphrey’s McGee and Eggy kicked off a string of seven shows together on Thursday with a concert at The Pageant in St. Louis. The first collaboration of the run came during UM’s second of two headlining sets when Eggy guitarist Jake Brownstein, drummer Alex Bailey and keyboardist Dani Battat emerged for a cover of Talking Heads’ “Girlfriend Is Better.”
Stolen Gin began the concert at The Pageant with a 45-minute performance. Eggy took the stage next and delivered a six-song set that included a take on Paul McCartney’s “Coming Up” amid originals. The Connecticut-based quartet’s upcoming new album, Waiting Game, was represented in the setlist by “A Moment’s Notice.”

Fittingly, Umphrey’s McGee began their first performance in over a month with “Get In The Van.” The classic “Walletsworth” trailed behind and then “Always October” bled into a “Ringo” that encapsulated the band’s first “Stanton” since October 22, 2016. An extended “Night Nurse” brought the set to a close.
Umphrey’s McGee focused on the jams in St. Louis as six songs spanned at least 14 minutes. Four of them came within the second set.
The improvisational highlight of the night was a +27-minute version of “Attachments” that launched the closing stanza. Brownstein, Bailey and Battat came out after the ensuing “Fenced In” to “fuck shit up” on “Girlfriend Is Better” at the urging of UM guitarist Brendan Bayliss.
The nine musicians took Talking Heads’ 1984 single deep. Jake Brownstein unleashed the first solo and then traded licks with Umphrey’s Jake Cinninger. Alex Bailey, Andy Farag and Kris Myers provided two drum/percussion fills with Brownstein picking up where he left off in between. The cover climaxed with more double Jake action.

Umphrey’s McGee punctuated the set sans guests by jamming out “Higgins” and “Slacker.” A “The Floor” encore was added for good measure.
