Umphrey’s McGee Dusts Off ‘Raymond’ In Louisville

Umphrey’s McGee followed a trio of sets at this year’s Lockn’ Festival with a Saturday night show at Iroquois Amphitheatre. The band worked a rare instrumental they hadn’t played since 2014 into their first of two sets in Louisville.
The six-piece band kicked off Saturday’s opening stanza with an adventurous “Dump City.” Umphrey’s then performed “Push & Pull” from their most recent album it’s you for just the third time ever. Next up was a jammed-out “Looks” from UM’s other 2018 record, it’s not us. Umphrey’s put a focus on older material for the end of the set beginning with a pairing of “Out Of Order” and “Slacker.” The biggest surprise of the night came within “Example 1,” as the sextet dusted off the instrumental “Raymond” for the first time since April 3, 2014 – a span of 424 shows. Another rarity followed with the second “Roulette” of 2018 leading into a set-closing “Miss Tinkle’s Overture.”
Umphrey’s started their second set with a long and expansive “Der Bluten Kat.” Guitarists Brendan Bayliss and Jake Cinninger swapped turns leading the improvisation over the course of 20 minutes before the band segued into the old school version of “Cut The Cable” before UM finished “DBK.” The heavy-hitting “Mad Love” came next along with a cover of The Clash’s “Rock The Casbah.” Drummer Kris Myers and percussionist Andy Farag provided a duet that connected “Rock The Casbah” and fan-favorite instrumental “The Triple Wide.”
Saturday’s short-and-sweet “Triple Wide” gave way to it’s you rocker “Triangle Tear.” Umphrey’s then ended the set with the Bayliss-led “August.” The band said farewell to Louisville with an encore featuring “Soul Food II” within “1348.”
