Umphreys McGee Continues Impressive New Years Run

There’s just one night to go in Umphrey’s McGee’s unprecedented five-night New Year’s Run at The Tabernacle in Atlanta and if the past four nights should be a guide, you can expect the band to continue to pull out all the stops in Georgia. Last night’s penultimate show of the run included an acoustic segment, a cover debut, a special guest and saw the guys emerge for the encore dressed in robes.

Umphrey’s began last night’s performance with the “You Got The Wrong Guy” intro into a well-jammed rendition of “Higgins” that extended nearly 15 minutes. The “Der Bluten Kat” that followed contained a full rendition of Grandmaster Flash’s “The Message” within it. After “2×2,” Guitarists Brendan Bayliss and Jake Cinninger then exchanged their usual electrics for acoustic guitars to end the first set with a sequence of “Uncle Wally,” “Nemo” > “Sweetness” > “Nemo” and the UM debut of CSN’s “Southern Cross.”

“Hurt Bird Bath” kicked off Set Two and featured “Upward” in the middle. “Push The Pig” then led into the instrumental “The Fussy Dutchman.” Following “Conduit,” former STS9 bassist David Murphy came out to replace Ryan Stasik on a pair of Pink Floyd covers -“In The Flesh” and “Another Brick In The Wall.” When Umphrey’s came back for the encore, the band and crew were decked out in robes as they closed the show with “Glory” and “Slacker.”

Umphrey’s McGee concludes the five-night stand tonight. A webcast is available via TourGigs.
