Full Show Audio: Umphrey’s McGee Closes First Avenue Run With Second Encore

Umphrey’s McGee played the third show of a three-night stand at First Avenue in Minneapolis Saturday night. The sextet mixed rarities, covers and extended jams during the concert that was capped with full-fledged second encore.

UM’s third night at First Ave began with a pairing of “Gents” > “1348,” which was then followed by the long played original “Andy’s Last Beer.” A run through “The Bottom Half” came before the rarely played “Liquid” which was led by guitarist Jake Cinninger for just the fourth time since 2012. Fellow guitarist Brendan Bayliss took the ensemble through “Thin Air” ahead of a take on the Mark Knopfler instrumental “We’re Going War.” The evening’s first cover was played just once last year at the band’s appearance in Chattanooga, Tennessee in February, some 125 shows ago. The first set came to a close with a rendition of “Hurt Bird Bath.”

UM original “JaJunk” kicked off the second set, trailed by a sequence featuring “Nemo” > “Sweetness” > “Dancing Days” > “Nemo.” It was only the second time Umphrey’s performed Led Zeppelin’s “Dancing Days,” which they debuted during an All Night Wrong show earlier in the month. “Dump City” saw a long stretch of improvisation as did the build up “Jimmy Stewart” jam leading into the subsequent “In The Kitchen.” The third and final cover of the night, Talking Heads’ “Making Flippy Floppy” filled the set closer slot before the band left and returned to the stage for the an encore comprising “2nd Self” > “The Floor.”

Despite the First Ave house lights coming on, a demanding audience cheered enough to draw UM back to the stage for a second encore. The band came through with “The Triple Wide” bolstered by a “Jimmy Stewart” jam (featuring Bayliss singing the recurring “Cigarette” motif) and Cinninger joining Joel Cummins on keys, finally drawing the run at the storied venue to a close.
