Umphrey’s McGee Stacks Canopy Club Setlist With Bust Outs

Umphrey’s McGee returned to the Canopy Club in Champaign, Illinois for a show Thursday night. Their performance at the band’s most-played venue was stacked with bust outs, rarities and the debut of their original “Hanging Chads.”

The first surprise of the evening came four songs into the first set when guitarist Jake Cinninger led the group through their first performance of “Liquid” since 2016, ending a 194 show absence. After jamming on the old-school “Q*Bert” and transitioning into “Similar Skin,” the band broke out “Pooh Doggie” for the just the second time since 2006. The first set ended with “It Doesn’t Matter,” which made its debut earlier this year.

“Phil’s Farm” kicked off the second set, followed by percussionist Andy Farag coming forward to lead a cover of Frank Zappa’s “Dirty Love” which was last played in 2016 (a 240 show gap). After “Nemo,” came “1000 Places to See Before You Die,” which was the first out its six performances to not showcase a guest horn player. Longtime favorites “FF” and “All Things Ninja” came ahead of the debut of the punk rock ditty “Hanging Chads” featuring the rare lead vocals of bassist Ryan Stasik. Ween’s “Take Me Away,” only played once before during the GODBONER set with Gene Ween at Summer Camp in 2015, closed out the second set. Funky instrumental “Soul Food I” initiated the encore and the classic coy ballad “Baby Honey Sugar Darlin’” – last played 637 shows ago in 2012 – brought an end to the concert.
