Umphrey’s McGee Busts Out Ween Cover In Portland
By Andy Kahn Mar 13, 2016 • 7:26 am PDT
Last night Umphrey’s McGee continued their tour of the western portion of the country with a stop in Portland, Oregon for the first of two nights at the Crystal Ballroom. UM treated fans to just their second rendition of a Ween cover, busting it out for the first time since last May.
The first set of Umphrey’s show Saturday evening got started with “Dump City” and also saw guitarists Brendan Bayliss and Jake Cinninger join Joel Cummins on keyboards during a jam in the middle of “Nemo.” Staples “Push The Pig” and “Uncle Wally” and the set closer “Hindsight” helped round out the first half of the show.
Opening set two, Ween’s “Transdermal Celebration” from the recently reunited band’s 2003 LP Quebec was busted out for just the second live UM performance, after appearing to have been scrapped from the setlist Friday night. The cover was debuted last year at Summer Camp during the “GODBONER Meets Gene Ween” set that saw Aaron “Gene Ween” Freeman fronting Umphrey’s. The second set also included a performance of Mantis tracks “Made To Measure” within “1348,” and the set closing pairing of “Le Blitz” > ”Educated Guess.”
