Last night in Milwaukee Umphrey’s McGee wrapped a three-night stand at the Riverside Theater. The April Fools’ Day show featured UM busting out a pair of covers for the first time in several years.
The 25-minute trio of “Depth Charge” > “Wappy Sprayberry” > “Higgins” got the third night in Milwaukee underway. Later in the set UM broke out “Crucial Taunt” for its first performance since last August. The original was followed by a rarely played cover of Radiohead’s “Weird Fishes/Arpeggi,” which also had been absent from setlists since last August and a set closing “The Floor.”
Set two opened with “1348” trailed by “Speak Up” and rendition of “Plunger” featuring “Kula” performed within. UM then busted out a cover of “Voice Inside My Head,” marking just their eighth rendition of The Police song that was last played in 2010, covering a 683 show gap between performances. “Conduit” came next before a version of “Mulche’s Odyssey” that worked in a bust out cover of Bob Marley’s “Burnin’ And Lootin,’” which marked the fifth occasion UM has played the reggae favorite, having last made a setlist in 2014 (a 324 show gap).
The set came to a close with a final bust out cover in the form of “Bittersweet Symphony” with the band’s second performance of The Verve’s song coming 279 shows after its 2014 debut. Instrumental dance-rocker “The Triple Wide” was the selection for the encore and brought UM’s Milwaukee run to a close.
