Umphrey’s McGee closed out their two-night run at ExploreAsheville.com Arena in Asheville, North Carolina on Saturday night. UM welcomed Empire Strikes Brass Horns to close out the first set and Billy Strings for a Jimi Hendrix cover in the second set.
Umph kicked things off with “October Rain” before heading into “Rocktopus.” “Silent Type” came next ahead of a continuous section of “Made to Measure,” “Eat,” “Deeper” and “Miss Tinkle’s Overture.” Empire Strikes Brass Horns then joined the band for “National Loser Anthem,” a mashup of Radiohead‘s “National Anthem” and Beck‘s “Loser,” followed by “Bad Friday” to close out the first frame. Empire Strikes Brass added to the first “National Loser Anthem” since March 23, 2018 (168 shows) as well as “Bad Friday.”
Set two got underway with “Dark Brush” followed by “Dump City.” Billy Strings then joined the band for Hendrix’s “Voodoo Child,” which UM hadn’t played since February 21, 2014 for a total of 574 shows. Billy fired off some riffs to kick off the song before Brendan Bayliss got into the verse. Jake Cinninger and Strings traded licks ahead of another verse before Bayliss would add some harmony guitar with Billy and Jake. Next, UM wouldn’t stop in a run that ramped up with “Bridgeless” into “Night Nurse,” “Attachments” and “Pay the Snucka” before heading back into “Bridgeless” to bring the second set to a close. UM got the encore going with “Half-Delayed” before returning to “Pay The Snucka” to wrap things up.
