Umphrey’s McGee capped an eventful three-show run at Brooklyn Bowl in New York City on Sunday night. Guitarist Daniel Donato joined the band on Derek & The Dominos’ “Bell Bottom Blues,” which UM had not played in 20 years.
Umphrey’s McGee began their Brooklyn Bowl run on Friday and incorporated tributes to musicians who recently passed away, with nods to D'Angelo, KISS' Ace Frehley, Limp Bizkit's Sam Rivers and The O’Jays Anthony Jackson. Night one ended with an encore that included UM’s first performance of “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” by Tears For Fears.
Saturday’s second show at Brooklyn Bowl featured a guest appearance by accomplished hip-hop bassist/producer Brady Watt, who replaced Ryan Stasik at the end of the first set for “Ain’t No Fun (If the Homies Can’t Have None),” the Snoop Dogg track that UM had not performed since 2018. The second set “Mulche’s Odyssey” was augmented by lespecial drummer Rory Dolan joining Andy Farag on percussion.
The third UM NYC show added Donato’s guitar to the mix in the middle of the first set. Donato, who on Saturday headlined The Capitol Theatre in nearby Port Chester, took the stage at Brooklyn Bowl and started trading licks with UM guitarists Brendan Bayliss and Jake Cinninger on “Hiccup.” The guest guitarist remained for Umphrey’s McGee’s first public attempt at “Bell Bottom Blues” since September 20, 2005, ending a 1,938 show absence between setlist appearances.
Set two on Sunday saw the emergence of bassist Blu DeTiger, who took over for Stasik on Prince’s “I Wanna Be Your Lover.” Keyboardist Ross Bogan, who performed with Stasik in Doom Flamingo, worked in tandem with UM’s Joel Cummins for the late-set “Wappy Sprayberry.”
