Legendary reggae musician U-Roy tapped fellow Jamaican Rygin King to contribute to a cover of “Stop That Train” that appears on Solid Gold U-Roy, a posthumous album due via Trojan Jamaica/BMG on July 16. U-Roy was originally slated to release the album in 2020 but the pandemic led to a delay. Sadly, the Jamaican vocalist died on February 17 at age 78 leaving Solid Gold U-Roy as his final record. Today, the “Stop That Train” single and an accompanying video arrived in advance of Solid Gold U-Roy.

Solid Gold U-Roy was co-produced by Youth and Trojan Jamaica co-founders Zak Starkey and Sshh Liguz. Guests on the 12-track LP include Ziggy Marley, Santigold, Shaggy, Sly & Robbie, Scientist and The Clash’s Mick Jones.

U-Roy and Rygin King are backed on “Stop That Train” by Zak Starkey on guitar, famed New Orleans-based musician Cyril Neville on percussion, drummer Sly Dunbar, bassist Robbie Shakespeare, guitarist Tony Chin, keyboardist Robbie Lyn, trumpeter Stingwray and saxophonist Dean Fraser. Shakespeare, Chin and Fraser each contributed backing vocals to a cover of song that originally scored The Spanishtonians a hit in 1965.

“We met Rygin after his legendary Sumfest performance and thought he was a proper rock star and asked him to participate in the U-Roy record,” said Zak and Sshh. “Rygin agreed immediately, and it was great recording with him for ‘Stop That Train.’”

“It’s a great feeling to collaborate with a legend like Daddy U-Roy,” added Rygin King. “Not many people end up on a track with one of their elders, so I want to give thanks to everyone who made it possible… big up Trojan Jamaica and U-Roy. ‘Stop That Train’ is a classic song that is part of our culture.”
