Ty Segall recently brought his band to NPR Music’s Washington D.C. studios for their Tiny Desk Concert debut. The guitarist and his bandmates — bassist Mikal Cronin, guitarist Emmett Kelly, keyboardist Ben Boye and drummer Evan Burrows — romped through five selections from across Segall’s catalog.
NPR’s Robin Hilton made sure Ty Segall was aware that Tiny Desk performances didn’t need to be stripped-down or all-acoustic sets. “We shall rock,” Segall told Hilton in response and came through on his promise.
Ty Segall kicked off the set with the hard-driving “You’re The Doctor” off 2012’s Twins and then performed the title track from his recently released studio album, Possession.
The quintet rolled through “Whisper” from 2021’s Harmonizer next before looking to Melted (2010) for the anthemic “Girlfriend.” Segall and his bandmates tacked on Three Bells cut “My Best Friend,” which featured fretboard fireworks galore from Ty, to end the set.
