Twiddle hith the Palace Theatre in Albany, New York on Saturday for their final concert for a few weeks. As with the night previous in Maine, Kung Fu and Marble Eyes drummer Adrian Tramontano filled in for Twiddle’s Brook Jordan on the kit and the band also welcomed members of Midnight North and other special guests.
Midnight North got the concert underway with a set that saw Twiddle frontman and guitarist Mihali Savoulidis joining for originals “Greene County” and “The Sailor And The Sea.” Twiddle’s first set began with keyboardist Ryan Dempsey delivering the piano intro of “Enter” which led into its Plump Chapter 2 opening sequence companion “Orlando’s.” Staples “Syncopated Healing,” “White Light” and “Apples” followed. The John Prine tune “Angel From Montgomery” saw Twiddle recruit Midnight North’s Elliott Peck on vocals and singer-songwriter Joe Cirotti on guitar. Peck lent a powerful lead vocal performance and Cirotti delivered a scorching guitar solo. The quartet then went it alone for set closer “Stroganoff.”
The second frame got going with an expansive “Latin Tang” that clocked in at over 17 minutes. Midnight North guitarist Grahame Lesh emerged for the recently debuted Twiddle original “Mildew Man” which prefaced a guest-filled cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Shakedown Street.” The disco-tinged Dead classic featured a full band sit-in from Midnight North including Peck and Lesh as well as multi-instrumentalists Nathan Graham and Connor O’Sullivan who joined Dempsey in keys world. Mihali sang lead on the title track to GD’s 1978 LP with Lesh and Peck adding backing vocals over Tramontano’s four on the floor beat. Next up came rave-up “The Box” before Grahame and Elliott helped out on “Lost In The Cold” to close the set.
Twiddle returned to the stage to encore with the recently released single “The Devil,” which the band live debuted one night prior. The quartet was augmented by frequent collaborator Scott Hannay, who joined Dempsey on keys for “The Devil” and added some stellar synth stylings to the rocker.
