Twiddle Goes Acoustic On Opening Night In Vermont

Twiddle kicked off a two-night livestream run from their home state of Vermont on Thursday. The quartet delivered two all-original sets, the first of which saw the band utilizing acoustic instruments.

The concert got underway with “Syncopated Healing” from the band’s 2017 double LP, Plump. The spirited version saw an early piano solo from keyboardist Ryan Dempsey. The band then cooled down the jam down to a simmer before guitarist Mihali Savoulidis brought it to a boil ahead of the song’s climactic conclusion. “Every Soul” then encompassed “River Drift” ahead of drummer Brook Jordan hopping on acoustic guitar for “Dusk Til Dawn.” Next up, Mihali went acoustic for the newer tune “Distance Makes The Heart,” which the band debuted last fall, ahead of a mashup of “Lost in The Cold” and a reggae version of “When It Rains It Poors” dubbed “Lost In The Pooring Rain.” Twiddle brought the first frame to a close with the classic live staple “Zazu’s Flight.”

Twiddle kicked off the second set with some shimmering, synth-soaked space before Mihali led the way on the opening riff of another classic, “Frankenfoote.” The song saw bassist Zdenek Gubb engaging some effects before the band dropped into the sung reggae portion of the song which also featured a melodica and keytar solo from Dempsey. The keyboardist hopped back on the piano as the band built up the jam before Ryan launched into a joyous solo. The band then headed into “Grandpa Fox,” which appears after “Frankenfoote” on Twiddle’s 2007 debut The Natural Evolution of Consciousness. “Grandpa Fox” in turn headed into “Tiberius” which found its way into “Brown Chicken Brown Cow” before the band returned to “Tiberius.” The second set came to a close with more vintage Twiddle in “Subconscious Prelude.” The band retook the stage for a two-song encore that began with “Caterpillar” before the quartet bookended the second set and encore with “Frankenfoote.”
