Former Turkuaz Frontman Dave Brandwein Returns With Band For Sale Debut Album

Dave Brandwein released his solo debut album, Sleeping Sun, Waking Moon today under his Band For Sale moniker. After fronting the funk outfit Turkuaz, Brandwein returns to his rock and 20th century singer-songwriter roots on the new record.

“People are going to hear this music and think it’s some kind of departure for me,” Brandwein explained, “but the truth is that Turkuaz has always been the departure. I grew up on The Beatles, Paul Simon, Jackson Browne, and the sounds of the 60’s and 70’s. This album is who I’ve always been deep down.”

Brandwein wrote, recorded and produced Sleeping Sun, Waking Moon himself over a 10-year span. The LP also sees contributions from former Lucius vocalist Andrew Burri, Train drummer Matt Musty, Grace Potter bassist Kurtis Keber, Stepkids drummer Tim Walsh, and original London Souls bassist Kiyoshi Matsuyama.

Brandwein previewed Sleeping Sun, Waking Moon with the single, “Is There Anybody?” Although he wrote the song after a college breakup, the tune has come to have new meaning as the musician navigates another transitional period in his life.

“Facing the possibility of being on my own again, I had to wonder, ‘Is there anybody? Another person out there that I would find to understand me and feel for me?’ Soon after, I was actually in another relationship which would eventually be my marriage. Oddly, as the record reached completion all these years later, I found myself in the same position once again. It’s strange, and I suppose, could be seen as tragic, but it’s really more bittersweet. It’s as hopeful as it is sad.

I’m just discovering who I am as an adult, sober, not in a relationship or part of a band, living on my own. I’m in a period of rediscovery, which is admittedly terrifying… I am taking this as an opportunity to figure it out. Having all this music come out after this time is kind of like a purging of all these things that made me who I was before and figuring out what the next phase holds.
