Turbine Previews Radiodead Set At Catskill Chill

This year’s Catskill Chill starts with a Thursday pre-party tomorrow before a full weekend of music at New Minglewood in Lakewood, Pennsylvania. Catskill Chill is known for the many inventive tribute sets and collaborations its hosted over the years and the 2016 installment won’t be an exception. One such tribute will find New York City’s Turbine presenting a “Radiodead” set on Saturday night in Club Chill.
Turbine will interpret Grateful Dead songs as if they were written by Radiohead and vice versa. The band has shared some thoughts about what to expect as well as a demo of a Radiodead tune, “We are super excited to debut our Radiodead set this weekend at Catskill Chill. We wanted to offer some explanation and guidance to increase everyone’s enjoyment of the set. While kicking around ideas for what our ‘tribute set’ would be, as it seems every band out there had claimed some classic group already, Ryan thought it would be fun to be Radiodead, where Radiohead plays the music of the Grateful Dead and vice versa.
“To make a long story short, this idea remained something the band thought was cool but had no intention of actually doing until some friends asked us to consider making it a reality. Initially the feeling was that maybe it could be good, but would require an amazing amount of work. That all changed one day in April of this year when Jeremy woke up with Radiohead playing ‘Brown Eyed Women’ in his head. After that the floodgates opened and all of a sudden it became easy to hear how one group would play the other’s music,” writes Turbine about their upcoming set.
Turbine adds, “It has truly been a wonderful experience doing this project. Although very weird, it has enabled us to use songwriting to pay tribute in a way that we don’t think has ever been done before, whether you like it or not. You may find some of it a bit sacrilegious; these are beloved classics that we’ve altered in significant ways, but we hope that you will find the musical humor in what we’ve done, the love we have for the songs themselves, and also the deep appreciation for two great bands with almost polar opposite approaches to music.”
With that in mind, listen to a demo of “The National Anthem” as played by the Dead, which will give you a taste of what to expect from Turbine’s Radiodead set:
Also, in unjambandlike fashion, the band wants to point out two additional Radiohead songs that will be part of the set so fans who are unfamiliar with the originals can familiarize themselves:
