Phish lyricist Tom Marshall‘s 60th birthday was celebrated on Saturday night with a concert at the historic Stone Pony in Asbury Park, New Jersey organized by Nectar’s Presents. Marshall’s childhood friend and longtime writing partner, Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio, led a surprise Trey Anastasio Band performance as part of the festivities.
The show was billed as Soule Monde, a duo consisting of TAB keyboardist Ray Paczkowski and drummer Russ Lawton, with special guest bassist Dezron Douglas. Guitarist Anthony Krizan, a former member of both the Spin Doctors and Marshall’s Amfibian project was set to open with his eponymous band. The Anthony Krizan Band and Soule Monde/LaMP featuring Lawton, Paczkowski, Douglas and guitarist Scott Metzger each took the stage at the Stone Pony for sets on Saturday.

Trey Anastasio and Tom Marshall played a pair of Phish classics as an acoustic duet on Saturday. Anastasio told the story behind the Billy Breathes co-write “Waste” before performing the tune. Trey noted the pair have been writing together since the fifth grade and called their collaborations and friendship “one of the great joys of my life.” The guitarist also spoke about the duo’s fashion choices at the time and how some of those in the Cayman Islands where they wrote such songs as “Waste” and “Character Zero” thought they were romantic partners.
Anastasio, Douglas, Lawton and Paczkowski delivered a TAB set at The Stone Pony heavy on songs with lyrics by Tom Marshall. The quartet started the 85-minute frame with the pairing of “Back On The Train” and “Sand.” Tom Marshall then emerged to help sing a cover of Chumbawumba’s 1997 hit “Tubthumping.” While “Tubthumping” was a TAB debut, Marshall famously sang the song with Phish at Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Virginia on November 21, 1998. Trumpeter Tony Perusso also contributed to the Chumbawumba cover on Saturday. Anastasio tacked on a quick run through “Happy Birthday To You” in honor of his friend while Marshall vacated the stage.
The surprise TAB set continued with a peformance of “Outside The Lines,” one of the most recent Anastasio/Marshall collaborations. It was then back to Phish classics for the rest of the frame including “Wolfman’s Brother,” “The Moma Dance,” “No Men In No Man’s Land,” “Steam,” “Blaze On” and “Ghost.”
