Trey Anastasio’s ‘Headphones’ Spotify Playlist
Phish bassist Mike Gordon is often the member of the band who first comes to mind when it comes to using social media, as evidenced by Gordon’s use of Instagram for free ticket scavenger hunts over the course of summer tour. Gordon’s band mate, guitarist Trey Anastasio, has stepped up his Instagram game in recent weeks, sharing scenes from Bonnaroo and other Phish tour stops.
Anastasio has also utilized the Instagram Stories feature to share songs he’s listening to on Spotify. The song shares are cached in Trey’s “Headphones” saved stories highlights. This week’s edition of Saturday Stream compiles the tracks posted by Trey over the past few weeks.
Occasionally Trey writes something to accompany the emoji he tags the track shares with. When sharing Mdou Moctar’s “Ilana” he jokingly wrote “Taboot Taboot!” in reference to lyrics in the Phish song “Llama” and he wrote “Sunday” when posting Chico Buarque’s “Calice” from the David Byrne-curated Brazilian Classics compilation. Referencing the lyrics to “Institutionalized” by Suicidal Tendencies, Trey wrote “Just one” followed by an exploding Pepsi can emoji.
“The best electric guitar player ever,” wrote Trey when he shared “He Used To Cut The Grass” by Frank Zappa. “I was blessed to watch him play many times. I still miss Frank Zappa.”
The playlist currently also features tracks by Neil Young, Sun Ra, Brian Eno, Betty Davis, The Residents, Gillian Welch, Minutemen, Jónsi, Steel Pulse, The Carter Family, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Elliott Smith, Tinariwen, Prince Buster, Ruby Johnson, The Mills Brothers, Maria Schneider, The Pogues and Ben E. King. Listen to what’s been going through Trey’s headphones via the playlist below:
