Trey Anastasio Band Busts Out ‘The Landlady’ In Los Angeles
Trey Anastasio Band continued their winter tour with the first of two concerts at The Wiltern in Los Angeles on Friday. TAB would treat the L.A. audience to rarity “The Landlady” halfway through the first set and Trey also worked in a couple of solo acoustic tunes during the encore.
The show began with “Sometime After Sunset,” the opening track on TAB’s 2015 album Paper Wheels, followed by the afro-beat “Alive Again.” A rendition of zydeco ace Chris Ardoin’s “Acting The Devil” came next. A staple for TAB in the early 2000s, the song has seen resurgences over the years with the band most recently dusting it off during night two at The Capitol Theatre after a two and a half year absence. The Trey Anastasio/Amanda Green co-write “Burn That Bridge” followed. Anastasio and Green wrote the song for the musical Hands On A Hardbody and also wrote “Summer Of ‘89 and “My Problem Right There” together. Then came the elusive “The Landlady.”
The song has become a permanent part of the Phish tune “Punch You In The Eye,” but stand alone versions are rare for both Phish (these days) and TAB. The last time TAB played the Latin-tinged number came on New Year’s Eve in 2006 and The Wiltern rendition marked just the fourth outing for “The Landlady” since its TAB debut in early 2001. The band did, however, soundcheck the song the night before in San Diego, according to Phish.net. Next up, “Everything’s Right” ahead of just the second TAB performance of “Sigma Oasis” since debuting it this year at The Cap. The band then ran through “Liquid Time,” the instrumental “Olivia” and “Pigtail” ahead of the set closer “Money, Love And Change.”
The Phish song “No Men In No Man’s Land” kicked off the second set. Although Trey Anastasio Trio played the song regularly in the spring of 2018, the Wiltern version marked just the third full TAB outing. The classic “Night Speaks To A Woman” came next ahead of Ghosts Of The Forest guitar clinic “About To Run.” “Shine,” “Heavy Things” and “Simple Twist Up Dave” followed before Trey returned to Ghosts Of The Forest material with “A Life Beyond The Dream.” TAB would then jam “Mr. Completely” into “Tuesday” to bring the second set to a close.
Anastasio reemerged alone for the first solo acoustic encore of 2020. Trey got things going with the temporal tale “Backwards Down The Number Line” followed by just the sixth time Anastasio has ever played “Sleeping Monkey” solo acoustic. Trey then got help on the traditional tune “The Parting Glass” before “Rise/Come Together” capped off the evening.
