Trey Anastasio Band Reworks ‘Brief Time’ & Dusts Off ‘Goodbye Head’ In St. Augustine

Trey Anastasio of Phish continued a four-concert run in the Southeast with the Trey Anastasio Band on Wednesday night at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre in St. Augustine, Florida. Anastasio’s ensemble unveiled a new version of the Ghosts Of The Forest-birthed tune “Brief Time” and performed “Goodbye Head” for the first time since 2017.

Wednesday’s concert featured a first set heavy on TAB staples such as “Sand,” “Magilla,” “Everything’s Right,” “Curlew’s Call” and “Rise/Come Together.” The band opened the second set with “Night Speaks To A Woman” and continued a focus of classics with “Alive Again,” “Simple Twist Up Dave” and “Heavy Things.” Next up was “Set Your Soul Free” before TAB premiered a fresh arrangement of “Brief Time.”

Anastasio performed the song solo to start every Ghosts Of The Forest encore and also played it alone as part of TAB’s encore on April 28 at Brooklyn Bowl. In St. Augustine, Trey was backed on vocals by Jennifer Hartswick, James Casey and Natalie Cressman while Cyro Baptista provided accompaniment on tambourine. As Scott Marks pointed out, Anastasio didn’t utilize acoustic guitar unlike all previous renditions. Later in the frame, TAB busted out “Goodbye Head” for the first time since November 1, 2017. The night concluded with an encore featuring a cover of Gorillaz’s “Clint Eastwood” and the TAB original “First Tube.”
