The Travelin’ McCourys surprised their fans with a new studio album, One Chord That Rings True. The new release is the final recordings fiddler Jason Carter made with the band prior to his recent departure.
The Travelin’ McCourys – led by brothers – mandolinist Ronnie McCoury and banjoist Rob McCoury – released their last self-titled, Grammy Award-winning album in 2017. The long-in-the-making follow-up was recorded over the past several years, resulting in the 10-track album.
“What makes this one different is a result of spending so much time touring between albums,” Ronnie McCoury stated.
The One Chord That Rings True consists of covers of the Johnny Cash/Randy Scruggs co-write, “Passin’ Thru,” Tom T. Hall’s “I Like Beer,” Paul Simon’s “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover,” Bruce Hornsby’s “White Wheeled Limousine” and others. The album’s opening track, “Runaway Train,” was co-written by Rob and Ronnie’s father, bluegrass icon Del McCoury.
Ronnie and Rob recorded One Chord That Rings True with Carter, bassist Alan Bartram and guitarist Cody Kilby. Fiddler Christian Ward was recently named as the replacement for Carter, who left amicably to pursue a solo career.
