Influential funk act Tower of Power formed 50 years ago in Oakland and celebrated their golden anniversary with the release of a new album entitled Soul Side Of Town. The 10-piece band recently stopped by NPR Music’s offices to perform a Tiny Desk Concert.
Vocalist Marcus Scott leads the group, complete with their iconic five-piece horn section, through the title track from their recent release as well as a pair of classics. Tower Of Power followed “Soul Side Of Town” with a powerful rendition of “So Very Hard To Go.” For the finale, the Bay Area-based group performed perhaps their most well-known song – “What Is Hip?”
