Tool Welcomes Special Guests Emily Wolfe & Pat Mastelotto In Austin

Tool continued their winter tour on Wednesday (January 31) in Austin, Texas. Guitarist Emily Wolfe and drummer Pat Mastelotto each shared the stage separately with the progressive metal band during the concert held at the Moody Center.

Wolfe and Mastelotto were the group’s first special guests since guitarist Billy Strings sat-in with them. Strings joined Tool for “The Grudge” last week in Nashville. Billy previously let it rip on “Jambi” in Salt Lake City this past October.

The quartet — guitarist Adam Jones, vocalist Maynard James Keenan, bassist Justin Chancellor and drummer Danny Carey — brought out the Austin-based musicians late in the show. Emily Wolfe, who opened for Tool last October in Colorado, added her guitar to a performance of “The Grudge” just before the encore break. The song is featured on the band’s 2001 studio album, Lateralus.

When Tool returned from the encore break they lit into Fear Inoculum (2019) cut “Chocolate Chip Trip.” Mastelotto, a member of King Crimson since 1995, emerged for an improvised drum duet with Danny Carey during the song. The King Crimson drummer previously sat-in on “Chocolate Chip Trip” at Tool’s January 2020 concert in Austin.

The four-piece followed the guest appearances by going it alone for “Flood” and “Invincible.” Tool said farewell with a typically extended “Schism.”

Maynard James Keenan reminded attendees of the band’s policy against the use of phones at their shows. As usual, Tool let fans capture the evening’s “Schism” finale.

Tool’s swing through Texas concludes on Friday, February 2 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. The North American tour ends on February 18 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
