Tom Waits Joins Mavis Staples For Rare Live Performance

Renowned soul singer Mavis Staples performed a concert at Lagunitas Brewing Company in Petaluma, California on Monday night. The show featured a sit-in by singer-songwriter Tom Waits who has not performed live since 2015.

Staples this week announced the upcoming release of her new Jeff Tweedy written and produced LP If All I Was Was Black, which is due on November 17 through ANTI- Records. As noted by NME, Waits a had not sung in public since May 14, 2015 when he was a guest on The Late Show With David Letterman.

Waits joined Staples for a rendition of The Staples Singers’ classic “Respect Yourself.” Watch audience-shot video footage of the collaboration via Richard Zeno below:
