Earlier today Phish lyricist Tom Marshall shared the latest installment of his Under The Scales podcast which features Tom answering questions from fans. Tom received over 300 questions from fans and is aiming to answer some of those and additional questions submitted in monthly Q&A versions of Under The Scales starting with today’s episode.
Marshall, with the help of some of his closest friends, wound up answering a handful of questions in detail. The lyricist was asked when he was first really impressed by Phish and when he knew the band would hit it big. Other questions Tom answered include what he considers to be his most personal song, what are the most misunderstood lyrics he’s written, whether his songwriting can support his family and whether he hears Trey’s voice in his head when penning songs. The New Jersey native also explains his current method of writing tunes with Anastasio. It’s a fascinating listen and Marshall tells the stories behind a number of Phish songs along the way such as “Farmhouse,” “Walls Of The Cave” and “The Squirming Coil.”
