Tom Hamilton Debuts New Acoustic Project With Raina Mullen

Last weekend, Ardmore Music Hall in Ardmore, Pennsylvania hosted Unlimited Devotion: A Celebration Of The Grateful Dead as a fundraiser for the Rex Foundation and Camp Winnarainbow. Tom Hamilton of Joe Russo’s Almost Dead and Tom Hamilton’s American Babies performed both an acoustic set and as part of “The Gravy All-Stars” supergroup. Hamilton’s acoustic set was the debut of a texturally complex acoustic format that saw him perform with guitarist Raina Mullen. Pro-shot video of the entire set can be viewed below.

Tommy and Raina’s seven-song set on June 10 at Ardmore Music Hall included a batch of tunes from various American Babies albums as well as one of Mullen’s originals and an Alice In Chains cover. Hamilton and Mullen kicked off the set with the Babies’ “This Thing Ain’t Going Nowheres” and followed with “What Does It Mean To Be” and “Goddamn.” Raina then took the lead on “I Dare You” before the pair performed “Bring It In Close.” The duo brought the set to a conclusion with Alice In Chains’ “Got Me Wrong” and the American Babies classic “Winter War Games.”

“When I was asked to put something together for the Rex Foundation show I saw a low pressure opportunity to try something a bit different. My electric guitar playing has always been rooted in exploration of not only songs, but of sound in general. I wanted to bring that exploration of textures into an acoustic environment, mix in improvising with another player and see what happened. I think the results were intimate but still extremely dynamic and psychedelic,” Hamilton said of the set.
