Throwback Thursday | String Cheese Debuts Paul Simon Cover

With this year’s installment of Suwannee Hulaween about to begin, we thought this was the perfect opportunity to re-share a piece we did about the debut of one of The String Cheese Incident’s most-beloved covers. What can fans expect at Hulaween 2014? Check out our piece on What Makes A Great Halloween Show? for thoughts from SCI percussionist Jason Hann and many other musicians.

1999 was a big year for The String Cheese Incident as the Colorado-based band toured relentlessly expanding their fan base exponentially. The jam band held their 1999 Halloween show at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia and included a number of cover debuts in the second set.

One of those covers was Paul Simon’s “Under African Skies” off his classic Graceland album. String Cheese does “Under African Skies” justice, often jamming it out and it has since been performed over 60 more times. Today, let’s look back at exceptional pro-shot footage of the String Cheese Incident debut of “Under African Skies”:
