Throwback Thursday | Perpetual Groove Says Farewell In Athens

By Scott Bernstein May 28, 2015 7:40 am PDT

On a dark day in January 2013 the members of Perpetual Groove announced an “indefinite hiatus”. The announcement left room for a reunion, but from reading the statement from the group and Brock Butler’s apology you could understand why PGroove fans weren’t optimistic about the band’s eventual return.

Thankfully time heals all wounds and in February Perpetual Groove officially ended the hiatus with the announcement of a handful of shows including tonight’s performance at the Georgia Theatre in Athens. The quartet recently gathered in Atlanta for rehearsals and while we don’t want to share any spoilers, we’re excited about what the band has in store for both tonight’s show and tomorrow’s gig at the Georgia Theatre.

The Georgia Theatre is a venue that holds a special place for Perpetual Groove and vice versa. It was PGroove who were slated to perform at the theater in 2009, when the venue was ravaged by a fire. Perpetual Groove wound up donating over $7,000 to venue employees cementing a long-term relationship that has seen the band perform 68 shows at the Georgia Theatre over the years.

One of the those 68 PGroove shows at the Georgia Theatre took place on April 5, 2013 and was the group’s final performance before beginning the “indefinite hiatus” that ends tonight. Among the many highlights of the PGroove finale was a stirring rendition of “Three Weeks,” one of the band’s best originals with lyrics that you couldn’t help but compare to the situation the quartet found themselves in. Jam acts often take flack for their songwriting ability, but with originals such as “Three Weeks,” “Sweet Oblivious Antidote” and “It Starts Where It Ends,” songwriting was never a problem for Perpetual Groove. Watch the incredible 20-minute version of “Three Weeks” from the 2013 finale:

Perpetual Groove returns to the stage tonight. Tomorrow’s show will be streamed live via Yahoo! Live.
