Throwback Thursday | Happy Birthday Roy Orbison

One of the most renowned vocalists and singer-songwriters in the history of popular music, Roy Orbison would have turned 79 today had his life not been cut tragically short after suffering a heart attack at age 52. Known for wildly successful songs like “Only The Lonely” and “Oh, Pretty Woman,” Orbison was among the second class of inductees into the Rock And Roll Hall Fame in 1987. While his early hits brought him international success, he was just seeing a resurgence in his career as a member of the supergroup The Traveling Wilburys when he died in December 1988.

For Throwback Thursday we’re celebrating the Orbison’s life by taking a look at a mini-documentary made during the recording of The Wilburys first LP. Filmed in May 1988, The True Story Of The Traveling Wilburys captures behind-the-scenes moments mixed with interviews of Orbison, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne. Directed by Harrison, much of the film takes place at Dave Stewart’s Los Angeles home where Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 was recorded. Sadly, Orbison died before the recording of their second album, 1990’s Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3

Today, fellow Wilbury Jeff Lynne is being honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His Wilburys bandmate Tom Petty, along with Joe Walsh, are expected to speak at the unveiling ceremony.
