Throwback Thursday | Eric Clapton Rocks MSG With Derek Trucks

By Scott Bernstein Nov 13, 2014 1:40 pm PST

In the year 2006 Derek Trucks challenged his Allman Brothers band mate Warren Haynes for the title of “hardest working man in the jam scene,” when he appeared with three bands in 17 countries. Much of Derek’s 2006 was spent touring as a side man in Eric Clapton’s band. Trucks was a perfect fit for Slowhand’s touring band and handled many of the slide parts that Duane Allman made famous on the 1970 album Layla and other Assorted Love Songs put out by the group that Derek was named after – Derek And The Dominos.

Derek wasn’t even 30 by the time he started touring with Clapton, but Trucks has always performed with the assurance, professionalism and skills of a guitarist twice his age. For today’s Throwback Thursday let’s take a look at a full Clapton show featuring Derek Trucks that was recorded during Eric’s second of three September 2006 performances at Madison Square Garden in New York City. An audience member pointed his camera at the screens on the side of stage, which gives us just about as good of footage from the tour as is available since EC has yet to officially release a performance from DT’s time in his band:
