Abel Tesfaye gave several interviews last year saying he’s contemplating retiring his The Weeknd persona after completing his After Hours Til Dawn tour. Tesfaye might not be done with the project yet, as he unveiled a new song last night during his concert in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The Weeknd was joined by Anitta for a collaborative performance of their song “São Paulo” towards the middle of his sold-out show at the massive Estádio Olímpico Nilton Santos on Sunday. “We didn’t do anything for Rio, did we?” the Canadian artist exclaimed after the song. “I think we should,” the Brazilian singer chimed in.
Huge cheers went up from the capacity crowd as The Weeknd debuted “RIO” by spinning the new song while visuals legendary Japanese director Takashi Miike created for the track were displayed on screens. Tesfeye stood by to take in the audience reaction as Anitta danced along to the premiere of “RIO.”
The Weeknd just released a video for “RIO.” The Takashi Miike-directed clip features tour visuals, including footage from last night’s show. Watch the “RIO” live video below:
