The War On Drugs Dust Off John Lennon Cover & Welcome Tim Heidecker In Philadelphia

By Jeffrey Greenblatt Dec 20, 2018 10:17 am PST

On Wednesday, The War On Drugs kicked off their “Drug-Cember To Remember” run at Johnny Brenda’s in their hometown of Philadelphia. The three-show event with proceeds benefitting The Fund for the School District of Philadelphia finds the psychedelic heartland rock act performing in different venues each night. Yesterday’s opener saw the band unearth their cover of John Lennon’s “Mind Games” and perform with comedian Tim Heidecker.

The Tim & Eric star joined The War On Drugs right out of the gate as they reached back to their 2008 debut Wagonwheel Blues for “Arms Like Boulders” with Heidecker adding harmonica. From there, the six-piece act would judiciously serve up material from throughout their catalog offering up takes on fan-favorites like “Baby Missiles,” “Pain” “Buenos Aires Beach,” “Red Eyes” and “Under Pressure.” For the penultimate song of their 14-song night at the tiny 300-person capacity club, the sextet busted out their take on “Mind Games.” The band had last played the title track to Lennon’s 1973 album back on September 23, 2014 as per Setlist.FM. The War On Drugs’ Drug-Cember To Remember run contiunes tonight at Union Transfer. Watch “Mind Games” and full show video captured by markit aneight below:
