The Sorcerers: The Sorcerers

Leading off this set of albums from U.K.-based artists are The Sorcerers from Leeds who knocked me off my seat and into ready-to-boogie mode when I first heard their brand new debut self-titled album earlier this week. This is some seriously dark and groovy, Afro-inspired haunted house funk, the kind of music to invade your nightmares and turn them into after- midnight dance parties. Perfect for Halloween listening or, you know, right now.

Lasers from Atlantis: Lasers from Atlantis

Another self-titled debut that’s here to blast you off into outer space is from the London quartet Lasers from Atlantis. Heavy-duty synthesizer jams meet frenetic drumming somewhere in between heavy metal and far-out psychedelia. All and all, this is some pretty intense shit, so don’t tread lightly, but don’t be afraid either, the buzz is worth it.

Cranium Pie: Mechanisms, Part Two

A little less dark (but only a little) is Cranium Pie who brings a fresh take on keyboard-driven progressive. Their newest album, Mechanisms, Part Two, is a sonic journey filled with floating-on-air passages, bits of weirdo imaginative romps and some delicious grooving. There’s tons of creativity and tons of head-bobbing hooks to match. Enough to keep you busy until part three, that’s for sure.

It Hugs Back: Slow Wave

And finally for those of you who like something a little closer to terra firma, there’s the newest from It Hugs Back out of Kent, Slow Wave. The album opens with a track called “Goodbye” riding a warm breeze of beautiful guitars before making way for some nice harmonies and extended meandering that’s part krautrock, part indie. This sets the stage for an LP filled with plenty of subtle joys. This is music that’s given room to breathe and move, equally relaxed and intricate.
