The Roots were honored by their hometown of Philadephia by having a portion of East Passyunk Ave named after the influential hip-hop group. The “Avenue Of The Roots” sign was quietly unveiled last week.

As reported by Philly public radio outlet WHYY, city councilmember Mark Squilla introduced the resolution last Thursday and the following day (Friday, February 21) the “Avenue Of The Roots” signage was made public. According to the band’s drummer Questlove, “technically” the group was “supposed to wait for the vote” in May to hold a larger celebration surrounding the street naming, which would have coincided with the band’s annual Roots Picnic music festival.
