Simply put, The New Mastersounds are funky goodness incarnate. This U.K. based quartet – Eddie Roberts (guitar), Simon Allen (drums), Pete Shand (bass guitar) and Joe Tatton (organ and piano) – understands the ins & outs of soul music, from its tentative ’50s roots in Ray Charles right through James Brown, ’70s jazz-fusion, Bootsy Collins bomp, ’90s Acid Jazz and even splashes of today’s electronica flavored stuff. Live, they are all in, all the time, and they are the rare instrumental soul group that harness the same energies in the studio (see JamBase’s unadulterated rave for their latest album, Plug & Play, here). We were fortunate to have Mr. Vann and his trusty lens on-site when the band hit S.F. this month, and we’re happy to share what he captured that evening with y’all.
