By Andy Kahn Aug 29, 2017 • 7:29 am PDT

On September 8 The National will issue their new studio album Sleep Well Beast on the 4AD record label. The group has shared an official video for the LP’s single “Day I Die.”
The newly released single joins the previously issued “The System Only Dreams In Total Darkness” as one of 12 tracks on Sleep Well Beast. The album marks the follow-up to 2013’s Trouble Will Find Me and was produced by the group’s Aaron Dessner with co-production provided by his band mates Bryce Dessner and Matt Berninger. Recording sessions for Sleep Well Beast were held at Long Pond, Aaron Dessner’s Hudson Valley, New York studio, along with sessions that took place in Berlin, Paris and Los Angeles.
Director Casey Reas stated the following regarding the “Day I Die” video:
Graham MacIndoe captured 18 time-lapse photo series during rehearsals at Le Centquatre in June 2017 in Paris. Hours of rehearsal are compressed into a few minutes. Over 5,000 of these photographs were brought together to create the final video. I wrote custom software to collage multiple photographs together and to compile them into videos. A flickering color layer abstracted from broadcast television signals augments the black and white footage. The images are played back at 12fps, near the threshold of the persistence of vision.”
The National will takeover SiriusXMU on September 4 during which they’ll play songs from Sleep Well Beast. The next day they’ll perform the record in full live in Philadelphia on World Cafe with NPR Music presenting a free First Listen Live stream of the appearance. The band will also appear on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on September 7 and the next evening they will once again perform Sleep Well Beast at Bowery Ballroom exclusively for SiriusXM, which will stream the show as it happens. The National will then be featured on the September 9 episode of CBS This Morning – Saturday.
