The National & Mikkeller Announce New Beer: Reality Based Pils


Danish brewery Mikkeller teamed with American rockers The National to create a collaborative new beer. Mikkeller CEO Mikkel Borg Bjergsø developed the recipe for The National’s pilsner style Reality Based Pils.

The National’s Reality Based Pils will be released at Mikkeller’s locations and outlets around the globe in the new few weeks. The label for Reality Based Pils was designed by Keith Shore, Mikkeller’s art director who incorporated elements of the artwork for The National’s recently issued album Sleep Well Beast developed by the Pentagram design studio.

“We are all huge fans of Mikkeller so to have Mikkel make a recipe specifically for us is very exciting,” said The National’s Aaron Dessner. “We like clear and crisp beers when we come off stage and need to cool down.”

The National chose the brew’s name from their song “Walk It Back,” which quotes former president George W. Bush’s advisor Karl Rove’s use of the term “reality based community.”

“Politicians and others are now able to artificially shape reality using various means of propaganda and media manipulation,” added Dessner. “So it’s a frightening thing, the world is upside down. Imagining a ‘Reality Based Pils’ also gives us a much needed laugh.”

Bjergsø and Dessner have previously collaborated on the Copenhagen-based music festival Haven. They were first brought together by mutual friend and Mikkeller COO Jacob Gram Alsing.

“The National is one of my absolute favorite bands and we have been talking about making a beer together for a long time,” said Bjergsø. “I’m excited that it finally happened. After many years of drinking, tasting and brewing all sorts of different beer styles, I’ve kind of gone back to the roots. The only beer I have in my own fridge at the moment is pilsner, so making that style of beer for The National was an obvious choice.”
