The Mountain Goats have made available the first single from their forthcoming album, Transcendental Youth, entitled “Cry for Judas”. You can download the track for free below via the Merge Records soundcloud page. The track will also be available for purchase via iTunes.

John Darnielle said of the track, “Like a lot of the new album, this song is about saddling up your demons and learning to ride them like devil horses with big leathery wings. To the best of my knowledge, it’s also the first song ever to feature both a swinging horn section and a line about a baphomet drawn in chalk on an altar cloth, so everybody else who was trying to square that circle can take a breather now.”

Transcendental Youth will be released by Merge Records on October 2. Starting today, the first 1,000 pre-orders at the Merge site will receive a limited edition 7-inch single with two exclusive songs: “Steal Smoked Fish” b/w “In the Shadow of the Western Hills”.
